What to Consider
National parks and reserves
The best national parks can easily be combined with nearby travel destinations and game parks within the top African safari countries. For instance; Masai Mara and Amboseli in Kenya, Chobe Park and the Okavango Delta in Botswana, Hwange and Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, and Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania. Alternatively, you can make the most of your African safari adventure by visiting several, if not all, of the top national parks on one epic (long) overland Africa trip!
Clothing
It is recommended that neutral colours are best for traveling Africa. This includes shades of khaki, brown, beige/tan, and green. These colours blend in well with the bush and are best-suited to safari’s for a few important reasons like game viewing. By blending in with your surroundings, you enhance your game-viewing. Watching wildlife behaving naturally is the best way to see Africa’s spectacular fauna. The colour of your clothing can potentially scare off or disturb your sighting and, in some cases, threaten your safety. – something you want to avoid. You should avoid wearing Black and blue on safari, it not only stands out in the bush but these colours attract mosiquito tsetse flies and other insects; so much so that fly traps are made from blue and black fabrics.
Travel Times
Travel times from nearby cities and parks can exceed five hours. You can gain a significant amount of time by flying directly to the national parks and reserves. In most cases, this is the preferred choice for safari-goers because it can often be the equivalent cost depending on the season and whether it's a scheduled flight or private charter while saving you some perhaps tiresome hours on the road.
Ways to view wildlife
By boat
One of the best ways to watch wildlife and birds on safari in Africa is without a doubt by boat. It's hard to compete with a laid-back sunset cruise. Exceptional wildlife and bird sightings along the rivers and estuaries in top game reserves across Africa. Stunning scenery. Chilled sundowners and snacks or dinner onboard. Easy-paced, yet exciting and novel.
By air
Hot air balloon rides are offered at various places in Africa ( the Masai Mara and Serengeti being the most sought after) and provide an incredible, thrilling, bird’s-eye view of the vastness of Africa, with the abduant wildlife below. Helicopters on Safari are generally 4- or 6-seaters and many allow for good viewings for example the ones used at Victoria Falls. Do remember that, in the 6-seater, the middle seat is slightly more difficult to see from and ‘vehicles’ used differ with destination and provider. Light Planes on Safari are available both as a means to get to the park lodges and for a birds-eye view allowing spectacular photography opportunities – a once-in-a-lifetime experience. some locations are only reachable by air for instance the Okavango Delta in Botswana.
By land
Safari vehicle seating arrangements in general, can carry four to six (extended version) passengers, all forward-facing. While extended safari vehicles can carry more people, they tend to be slightly more difficult to handle on the road. Most of the Land Cruisers are 4X4s, allowing travel over the rough terrain that Africa is known for… such as those in Ngorongoro Crater.
While we offer self-hire safari vehicle options. It may be favorable to have an experienced driver who, more often than not have extensive knowledge not only of handling the rough terrain but of the areas through which we travel.
