When to visit >
The best time to visit Uganda largely depends on your preferences for weather and the activities you wish to experience. Uganda enjoys a tropical climate, and it's a year-round destination. However, there are two main seasons to consider:
Dry Season (December to February and June to September): The dry season is considered the best time to visit Uganda, especially for wildlife viewing and trekking activities. During this period, there is less rainfall, and the weather is generally dry, sunny, and more comfortable for outdoor activities. Wildlife congregates around water sources, making it easier to spot animals during game drives and boat safaris in national parks like Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, and Lake Mburo. It's also an ideal time for gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, as the trails are drier and more accessible. The dry season is the peak tourist season, so accommodations may be in higher demand, and it's advisable to book in advance.
Wet Season (March to May and October to November):The wet season, also known as the "green season," is characterised by more rainfall, especially in the form of afternoon showers and thunderstorms. While it can be hot and humid, the rains transform the landscape into lush greenery, creating beautiful scenery and opportunities for birdwatching. Many migratory birds arrive during this time, adding to the avian diversity. Gorilla trekking and wildlife viewing can still be done during the wet season, but the trails can be muddy and more challenging, and animals may be harder to spot due to the thicker vegetation. The wet season is the low tourist season, so you may find more affordable accommodations and fewer crowds.
If you prefer more comfortable weather and optimal conditions for wildlife viewing and gorilla trekking, consider visiting during the dry season from December to February or June to September. However, if you enjoy lush landscapes, birdwatching, and don't mind the possibility of occasional showers, the wet season from March to May and October to November can also be a rewarding time to visit.
Regardless of the season, Uganda's diverse landscapes, incredible wildlife, and warm hospitality promise a memorable and enriching travel experience.
